Introduction

The original Deed of Gift named 511 individuals. There were also subsequent censuses taken to include the children born to those individuals. They were mothers, fathers, children, skilled craftspeople, field laborers, and domestic workers. They had families, relationships, and lives that the institution of slavery tried to erase from the record. Below is the directory of surnames chosen by members of the freed community. None of the enslaved chose the Carter surname to start their new journey of freedom. Each name represents a family line with living descendants today. As research continues, individual profiles will expand with birth years, plantation assignments, manumission dates, family connections, and descendant information.
