<165> James (Trustin?) (also referred to as James Trusty
and "Jim) -- Born 1782. Son of Ciller Jones <372).
Residing at Forest in 1785, 1791, and 1796. Named in 1791.
deed of emancipation. Scheduled for emancipation in 1803.
In 1798, James went to serve es a waiter in Robert Carter's
household in Baltimore. He may worked in other households
as well. In 1800, Carter assigned James to Baltimore's
overseer of public works until the time for his emancipation
arrived. James ran awy on the day he was to take up his
new post, but Carter delivered him up the next day with the
instruction that he was to be confined outside of his
working hours. Within five weeks, James had suffered three
whippings from the public overseer, who returned hini to
Carter. The young man was then hired out to the constable
of Baltimore in January 180]. and stayed with him until
January 18, 1803, when Carter declared him free. Two days
later, James requested Carter's assistance in freeing his
friend David [More?), who was then in the Baltimore jail.
James stayed around Carter's house for at least several more
months, delivering messages and running errands. Sources:
