The parents of both Joseph Burke and Hannah (Gaskins) were enslaved and freed by Robert Carter III who lived at Nomini Hall Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia, but owned 18 seperate plantations in several Virginia counties comprising a total of 78,000 acres.C/bD
CbDTwelve of Carter's plantations were named for the Zodiac: Aquarius, Aries, Cancer, Capricorn, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Pisces, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Taurus and Virgo; plus Nomini Hall, Billinsgsgate, Coles Point, Old Ordinary and Mitchell's Spread.
