(254> Benjamin Taylor (Benn) -- Born 1774 or 1775. Son of Nanny (428>. Residing at Coles Point in 1785, 1791, and 1796. In 1785, Ben was injured in the qroin when he was gored by a steer. In the fall of 1788, he went to Nomony Hall at least twice to assist in getting in the hay. He was added to the list of laborers assigned to Coles Point in 1789 and again in 1790. However, in February 1790, his mother complained that Ben and another young man had been severely beaten and bruised by Newyear Branson, the overseer at Coles Point, whom Carter rebuked for the incident. Ben was named in the 1791 deed of emancipation and was scheduled for emancipation in 1797. He received his certificate of emancipation in January 1797. In September 1800, Taylor was imprisoned as a runaway in Upper Marlborough, Maryland,although, a he fiercely maintained, he had been free for several years. His fate after this date has not been determined.
