<150> John Robinson -- Born 1783. Described as mulatto.
Son of Betty Robinson <424>. Residing at Leo in 1788 and
1791. Named in 1791 deed of emancipation. Scheduled for
emancipation in 1805. In 1796, John went to live in Robert
Carter's household in Baltimore, but returned to Bull Run
early in 1797. Sometime during the following year, he was
sent to live with one of Carter's sons (either John Tasker
or George) near Leesburg in Loudoun County, Virginia. In
July 1798, an attempt was made (by an unknown party) to sell
him as a slave for life, but Carter stated that he could
only be bound until 1805, in accordance with the 1791 deed
of emancipation. John was emancipated by a deed dated
January 1, 1805, but the deed was refused by Frederick
County Court in April. Probably freed after 1808 ruling by
Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Sources: Deed of
