Biography
<356> Benjamin Brooke. (sometimes referred to as Ben Chine) -- Born ca. 1761-63. Parents unknown. Formerly from Leo, but residing at Nomony Hall in 1782, 1784 (tithable), and 1785 (tithable). Sent from Nomony to the Shenandoah tract in 1787, but ran away from Sagittarius to Nomony Hall in 1788. Residing at Nomony Hall in 1790, 1791, and 1796. Described as a collier in 1784. Temporarily assigned to Billingegate in December 1784 and to Gemini in September 1791. Named in 1791 deed of emancipation. Scheduled for emancipation in 1797. Assigned to work at Nornony Hall, but ran away to Baltimore in June 1793, claiming that John Tasker Carter had beaten him. Put to work under the Baltimore Street commissioner, but sent back to Nomony Hall at his own request in July 1793. Received certificate of emancipation in January 1797.
